A biopharma company just bought this massive property in Everett. I wanted to see what that actually means for the city.
I drove past this fence line three times before I stopped. It is the kind of property you stop noticing — flat, gray, fenced, quiet for years. Then the signage changed and suddenly there are trucks in there at 6am.
A biopharma company owns it now. That is the headline. What that actually means is harder: jobs that pay differently than the jobs already here, a payroll that shops and eats somewhere, and a block that will look nothing like it does in this photograph within a few years.
I stood at the corner for about twenty minutes. Two guys in vests, one flag, one dog walker who told me she has lived here since 1994 and does not know what is going in. That is usually how it goes. The paperwork moves years before the neighborhood hears anything.
I am not here to tell you it is good or bad. I am here to document it while it is still this — dirt, fence, cranes, unfinished. Everett has been waited on for a long time. This is what being built looks like up close.
